Well done to Becky Tomlinson and the other volunteers who spent the night sleeping rough in ASDA car park to raise awareness and money for the Night Shelter. Becky writes: -
"The rolling Night Shelter starts up again next month, providing a safe location for guests every night from November 2014-March 2015 along with a hot meal and breakfast. Last year this venture started and £50,000 was needed. This year £75,000 is needed for the entire project to be managed.
A big thank you to everyone who attended last night's Harvest Supper and Quiz.
8 teams competed for the chance to win chocolate...and glory! Well done to team 'Barely Feasible' who won with a very impressive score of 92, and to 'Maggie's Mob' who came second with 76.
Our supper was tasty as always - plenty of cheese, cold meats, nibbles and cake! A massive thanks goes to those who helped to prepare the food.
Chris and Rachel Marshall will be starting a Bible Expedition study group on Thursday nights from 18th September - for more information please see the 'events' section!
Sunday 20th July marked a significant milestone for Fr Paul Newman, who celebrated the Silver Jubilee of his ordination to the priesthood. St Alban's and Oakwood came together to celebrate this moment along with friends, family members and former parishioners of Fr Paul. His career has taken him to many communities in the Diocese including St Joseph’s Derby; Our Lady and St Joseph’s Matlock; Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Belper; Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Bulwell; the Diocesan Youth Centre at The Briars; and currently to the people of Chaddesden and Oakwood.
A very big thank you to everyone who was involved in the Gala whether it was by preparing, donating or serving refreshments, the service, stewarding or the staffing the stall. We think that between the two congregations of the Church on Oakwood and our friends from Woodlands, plus the Lunch Club helpers there were over 30 people involved.
On Sunday 29th June our former Parish Priest, Fr Gerry Murphy, celebrated the 40th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. It was a testament to the impact that he had on St Alban's and Oakwood during his 10 years here, that so many of us made the journey over to his present parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour at Bulwell to celebrate with him and extend our good wishes.
Yesterday members from both congregations met to share an Emmaus Walk around Chaddesden Woods. Weatherwise we couldn't have picked a better day as the sun was glorious. We read the account from Luke's Gospel of the two disciples encountering Jesus on the road to Emmaus:
Pentecost is a particularly special time for our Church Community, as we celebrate not only the birth of the Church with the coming of the Holy Spirit but also the birth of our joint covenant to work together as fellow Christians on Oakwood.
