Called to be Salt and Light

On Wednesday, The Church on Oakwood hosted the Christian Unity service, we were blessed to have representatives present from many of our local churches. The service was prepared for us this year by the Christians of Latvia, who took as their theme Jesus' call to us to be salt and light for the world.

The reflective and beautiful service brought out our responsibilities as Christians in today's world and the call to stand together as the Holy people of God.

Oakwood Team Win the St Alban's Epiphany Quiz Trophy!

St Alban's annual Epiphany Quiz was once again a great success, with the largest number of teams yet. The evening saw us tested on a full range of knowledge - sport, music, art and literature, film quotes, TV, pictures and women in the Bible. The light hearted and entertaining evening was led by quiz masters Geoff and Jo Rowlands, who kept us all in check and gave us a great night out. Many thanks go to them and to all the teams who took part.

The Gospel Tree - Poem by Tafadzwa Mhondiwa Mugari

There once was a shining Christmas tree
Standing out where all could see.
Its brilliance captured every eye
And seemed to cheer each passer by.

'The lights are so bright, ' they would say
And hesitate to walk away.
The tree stood proud ablaze with light
For every light was burning bright.

Then some bulb was heard to say
'I'm tired of burning night and day;
I think I'll just go out and take a rest
For I'm too tired to do my best;
Besides I am so very small
I doubt if I'd be missed at all.'

Then a child lovingly touched the light,

Christmas Events

The beautiful message of the Christingle was brought to life once more, with the annual lighting of our special oranges, reminding us that Jesus is the Light of the World, and his love and mercy is for all peoples. Both congregrations shared the Advent Wreath, with each candle representing a shared value - Hope, Love, Joy and Peace.

A Modern Telling of the Nativity!

Members of the congregation (young and more mature), treated us to an entertainingly updated version of the nativity story.

Great Evening of Entertainment with Paul Bell

Paul Bell was no more expecting to be spending Saturday night at The Church on Oakwood than the audience were expecting to see him. The sudden illness of a member of the booked act called for the need for a quick replacement and we were incredibly lucky to find Paul. He kept us entertained with his wry humour and down to earth, perceptive songs about marriage, the human condition, inequality, slippers and biscuits!

A huge thank you goes to John Cox and his family for organising both the entertainment and the food.
