Walkers and Talkers is an inclusive community group aiming at showing the heart of Jesus to the families in and around Oakwood with children under the age of 5 years.

It is a very friendly group and one that encourages the new parent, supports and aids the childminder and values the input from grandparents along with of course loving the children that come through the doors.

We meet on Wednesday afternoons in term time - 1pm to 2.30pm.

It is a chance for the adults to socialise and make new friendships while the children have fun and play.

2015/16 Report:
"We have had another eventful year beginning with a topic called ‘Ugly Bug Ball’. We looked each week at different creepy crawlies, discussed what that creatures job is and read themed stories. We ended this topic off fantastically with a planned hands-on experience thanks to a visit from Bugs’N’Bones.

We celebrated our 2nd birthday in March with a huge rainbow cake tying in well with our ‘I Can Sing a Rainbow’ topic, as we looked at individual colours along with shades and textures.

During the month of May, we had visits from Nurse Claire, PCSO Elaine, Dentist Joe and Fire Fighter Sarah who really supported our topic on the theme of ‘People Who Help Us’. They individually spoke each week about their job and how they look after people. We ended the topic with a way we can help other people – we completed a Sponsored Alice in Wonderland themed Toddle around Oakwood park. A grand total of £198 was collected for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Our summer term was ‘Healthy Eating, Healthy Living’ of which we covered the importance of washing hands, our 5 a day and we ended the topic with our Sports Day. The Oakwood Gala was a huge success for us again in reaching out to further families along with raising money to allow us to do further activities. Over the summer a number families met fortnightly for a ‘Picnic on the Park’ taking the contents of Becky’s shed and beginning games and encouraging other children on the park to join in also. This proved very successful, well attended and we had the weather on our side again!

We again went ‘On the Farm’ through the autumn term donating food products to the Hope Centre’s Food Bank for our Harvest contribution, along with learning about farm animals and ending the topic with the well loved trip to Bluebells Farm, for a look round and their yummy ice-cream!

Our Winter topic ‘Light in the Darkness’ again covered Bonfire Night, being safe in the dark, the making and meaning of the Christingle, along with our very own nativity. Many thanks again to John Cox for making our Christmas Party a huge success by being our Santa – it is much appreciated.

Thanks to the money raised at the Gala along with further children attending each week, we were again able subsidise our Christmas meal at the Oak & Acorn for the parents/childminders that have attended each week. We have done this for the third time now and proved to be a big success, a great night out and a fantastic opportunity to build on friendships. Our pudding party in February was another great opportunity to be together.

So far in 2016, we have looked at Fairy Tales this included planting our own beanstalks and decorating shields of armour and glass slippers!"
